High Hazels @ The Harley – 4/10/2013

Sheffield’s newest indie/rock quartet, High Hazels, took to the stage at a packed out Harley and proved why they’re a band to be excited about.

We were all there to celebrate the launch of their debut single ‘Hearts are breaking’. As they played this track, they quickly developed a choir of audience members, screaming the words out to ensure that everyone else knew how to join in next time. And yes, there will be a next time.

Their mesmerising 50s retro sound encapsulates a real immersive element. To the point where it felt weird that people were not waltzing to their fourth song, ‘Hanging Moon’.

The first tune that they ever released, French Rue – that one played out by radio stations before they even played it live – came towards the end. Not to knock the original recording, but it was miles better live.

There’s been a lot of talk about this band over the past year – for a band who hadn’t even played a gig this time last year, they certainly know how to cause a stir. Once their set was done and judgements could be properly made from their live sound, an encore was absolutely necessary.

The High Hazels haven’t reached their peak yet – they’re not even close.
