The world’s first invisible cinema, which has been commissioned by Santander, is visiting Sheffield in the coming weeks to raise awareness about online scamming. 


The invisible cinema is an innovative cinematic experience that displays what appears to be a blank screen to the naked eye. Evidentally the screen is not blank, but in order to view the film audiences must wear a special pair of polarised glasses.

The cinema, entitled ‘For Your Eyes Alone’ has been launched primarily to warn social media users about the dangers of oversharing online and highlight the importance of confidentially in regards to personal and financial details. Chris Ainsley, head of fraud strategy at Santander, has commented that the continuous use of social media in everyday life has led to “a culture of over sharing and being careless with sensitive information” which is leaving us “highly vulnerable to scams and fraud.”

Chris continues: “Our invisible cinema events are an innovative and entertaining way of raising awareness among this age group of the importance of keeping online banking details, passwords and personal information completely secret and for their eyes alone.”

Love Island star Wes Nelson is a spokesperson for the campaign and will appear in an ‘invisible’ trailer to share his advice on avoiding online scams before the screening of some of the most well-known films about con artists and scammers. Speaking about the campaign, Wes said: “If you ‘get a text’ make sure it’s genuine, and don’t become a member of this DBS club (Don’t Be Silly) by sharing your personal and security information – you don’t know what kind of trouble it could get you in to!”


The invisible cinema will tour the UK, visiting London, Brighton, Exeter and Sheffield Hallam universities, with more locations to be confirmed in 2019.
