Following The Leadmill’s acrimonious departure from its previous home on Leadmill Road, the venue has today announced the launch of a public crowdfunding campaign to secure a new permanent space in the city.

After 45 years at its original site, The Leadmill plans to reopen at a new location, hosting live music, comedy, club nights, cinema and talks.

A spokesperson for The Leadmill said: “This isn’t about starting over – it’s about continuing something that Sheffield helped build. The address may change, but the purpose stays the same: bringing people together through culture, music and creativity.”

The campaign, titled #TheNewLeadmill – Powered By The People, is seeking £30k and asks supporters to contribute towards the deposit, fit-out costs and long-term lease of a new venue.

The Leadmill says funds raised will be ring-fenced for securing a new space, fitting out performance areas and bars, installing technical equipment, improving accessibility and reinstalling heritage items including its neon sign.

The venue opened in 1980. Organisers say more than 10 million people have attended events there.

The crowdfunder aims to raise the capital needed to secure a new premises and allow the venue to continue operating independently.

The campaign is now live and open to supporters in Sheffield and beyond. It can be accessed here:
