Sheffield has been shortlisted as a finalist for European City of the Year at the 2020 Urbanism Awards.
However, the competition is fierce with other contestants being the city of Utrecht in the Netherlands and Porto, in Portugal both of whom are in the running for the European City of the Year Award.
Sheffield is one of the 15 ‘’Great Places’’ shortlisted for the awards by the Academy of Urbanism which cover five categories of scale, including European City of the Year, Great Town, Neighbourhood, Street and Place. The Academy of Urbanism is a politically independent, not-for-profit organisation that brings together both the current and next generation of urban leaders, thinkers and practitioners. It strives to cooperate with places to identify their strengths, and help them overcome obstacles, leading to further development. The Urbanism Awards’ objective is to recognise the best, most enduring or most improved urban environments, and to celebrate great placemaking.
Last year Kelham Island won the ‘’Great Neighbourhood’’ 2019 award over its other two contestants: Ancoats, Manchester and Hackney Wick, London. This year, the finalists were selected by a panel of academic ahead of the Academy’s annual Spring Debate. Following the announcement of the 15 ‘Great Places’, the Academy will establish relationships with key stakeholders in each place prior to a summer assessment visit.
The awards will culminate in a ceremony in London on 27 November where the winners will be announced. More information on the Academy of Urbanism can be found here.
