A planning application has been submitted to turn the Sleep Hotel on Scotland Street into a pub – its original use for centuries until 2000.
The Crown Inn was originally opened in 1797 and, according to experts on Sheffield History Forum, a group of Sheffield Chartists (a political and social reform movement in the 19th century) met in 1840 to discuss their strategy of seizing the Town Hall. The plan was foiled after another group of Chartists were overheard discussing plans in a Rotherham pub.
The Crown was turned into a bar called R&B Uptown Bar before closing in 2000. An application submitted by Wendy Woodhouse of Jaw Properties LTD has requested that building be restored to its former glories and reopen as a pub.
No details of opening hours or the number of staff required have been included in the proposal as of yet.
