Friends! The Musical Parody embraces exactly what it promises: parody in its purest form. From the outset, the audience are treated less like theatre-goers and more like a studio crowd at a live taping, complete with a playful warm-up that sets the tone brilliantly.

The show races through the main storylines of all 236 episodes across ten seasons of Friends, touching on the trials, tribulations and tangled romances that defined a generation. It does so with a knowing wink, leaning fully into satire while affectionately sending up the characters we all feel we know. There are clever nods to the cast’s real-life headlines too, with references ranging from Magnum P.I. to the tabloid fascination with Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie.

Performance-wise, Rachel and Phoebe are early standouts, capturing both the heart and the humour of their roles. Phoebe’s offbeat charm is particularly well observed. Yet it is the surprisingly multi-layered Gunther who quietly steals the show, wringing every ounce of comedy from his unrequited devotion and delivering some of the evening’s biggest laughs.

The cast as a whole have immersed themselves in the characters’ most pronounced traits. Ross’s exasperated sighing and laboured breathing are hilariously spot-on; Monica’s obsessive tendencies are heightened to comic perfection; and each familiar mannerism is exaggerated just enough to feel fresh without losing authenticity.

Uplifting, affectionate and knowingly silly, this production celebrates nostalgia while gently poking fun at it. For fans, it feels like coming home, only with better choreography.

Friends! The Musical Parody runs at The Buxton Opera House until 14 February. Tix available here.
