NORTH PRESENTS: Dave Angel // 17 May // Hagglers Corner

If you’re lucky enough to remember the “No Mugs” attitude of North n South nights then NORTH is sure to touch base with you. Opening up with UK techno scene royalty DAVE ANGEL and Flash Record’s very own Jamie Anderson, the tunes are set to take over Hagglers

NORTH

With open sunset mezzanine vibes, Sheffield’s spinners giving it large at the main bar and The Attic pumping out roof-moving, floor-grooving techno ‘til the wee hours, the night is a rare one, “a pure, head-down, all-in kinda night” says organiser Si Mclean.

Ahead of this quarterly event’s launch, we spoke with Si to find out more about what the event is all about, the spirit of NORTH and his personal history with the event’s inspiration.

You mention this is a “nod” to the legendary North n South nights—what do those nights mean to you personally, and how does NORTH differ or build on that legacy?

The North n South nights, for me, were about pushing boundaries and blending sounds that surprised people. It was a night run by myself and the late, great Rich Pastrami, all vinyl. I think our love of vinyl drew us together and I still miss him dearly.—it was the whole vibe of the night. That’s what we built with North & South in Sheffield. Running nights at places like Cremourne, Whitelion and then it kicked off at Hagglers Corner, it grew quickly with us playing at festivals and clubs across the UK.

Having played techno for such a long time, I think being able to experiment with all kinds of music was really liberating and we were able to bring something different to the table.

With NORTH, we’re aiming at taking that spirit and making it feel more focused. We’re about creating a space that mixes deep, authentic sounds with a sense of community.

What made Dave Angel the perfect choice to launch NORTH? Can you talk about his influence on UK techno and what kind of set you expect from him?

Dave’s been hugely influential to me for decades. I remember seeing him play when I was first getting into techno—he brought something different to the table. He helped shape the UK’s early response to Detroit techno. He was around during the early 90s when the UK sound was developing its identity, and his tracks have always had that perfect balance of driving energy and musicality. He’s one of those DJs who’s completely in control of a room, and I’m expecting him to bring a set that’s deep, vibrant, and technically tight. It’s exactly what NORTH needed—a pioneer whose sound fits the vibe we’re trying to create.

NORTH

Do you see NORTH as a response to a gap in Sheffield’s current nightlife? What kind of community are you hoping to build around it?

Definitely. After running North & South in Sheffield for so long, I saw that the city needed something that felt a bit more grounded—something that connected people of all ages in a deeper way. NORTH isn’t about putting on a flashy event; it’s about creating an environment where people can come, have a great time, and feel like they’re part of something authentic. It’s about building a community that values good music, respect for each other, and a real connection to the sound.

You want the night to be a bold “No Mugs” statement to the sound, could you tell us some more?

It’s a thing Rich Pastrami would always put at the end of any promo for North n South. It’s my nod to him. No Mugs, it’s a London term to “come correct”. No attitude, no idiots as it won’t be tolerated. It’s about creating a safe space for all. It’s simple, really—it’s about respect. Respect for the music, respect for the people, and respect for the space. If you’re part of NORTH, you’re part of the culture.
