Sheffield will mark the 75th anniversary of those who liberated Europe by taking part in the D-Day landings at Normandy beach, and the subsequent campaign in 1944.
Following the success of the Mi Amigo flypast this year, a commemorative event has been organised for 15 June in Norfolk Heritage Park. Speaking to the Sheffield Star, the secretary of the Sheffield Normandy Veterans Association Graham Askham said: “This will be the last time the people of Sheffield get the opportunity to say a proper thank you to these very special men, who gave us the freedom we enjoy today.
“The veterans are all in their 90s now and some are very frail but they’re determined to be there for what is sure to be a special day.”
At least 22 Normandy veterans are due to attend, with some reportedly travelling from Harrogate and Hull. Whilst details are yet to be confirmed, the RAF has announced that a Lancaster bomber will be flown over the city for the event. As well as a huge parade in Norfolk Heritage Park, there will be a smaller event in Weston Park where a new memorial stone and bench will be unveiled.
