Plans have been submitted to the council to renovate the dilapidated Cannon Hotel pub on Castle Street, 12 years after it was closed after police called it a “den of iniquity”.

The pub was a “haven” for drug dealers according to SYP’s Chris Brown, who said in 2007 that “it brought down that particular area of the city centre”. Now, construction company Aestrom Limited has submitted plans to transform the pub into a restaurant and retail space with three new flats above it.

A planning statement said: “The application proposal is to convert the existing pubic house into a mixed used scheme. The proposal is for the conversion of the existing public house and associated accommodation into two commercial units at ground floor with three self-contained apartments on the upper floors.

“The location is an inner city site so no parking is required. The proposed materials are chosen to reflect aesthetics of the surrounding buildings and area with high quality selection in material and profile.”

It is the latest in a series of regeneration projects down in the Castlegate area, with the opening of new social hub Kommune pencilled in for the end of the month and the reopening of the Boardwalk last year.
