A fresh arrival is set to shake up Sheffield’s waterside scene this autumn, as Canadian outfit The Tavern Collective launches its first-ever UK venue at Victoria Quays.

Tavern on the Quays officially opens its doors on 22nd September 2025, taking over a Grade II listed set of arches beneath the Quays Hotel – a previously-unused space dating back to 1855, now restored to show off original stone, brick and steel.

Rene Ortiz, UK & Ireland Director for Northland Restaurant Group, said: “We want Tavern on the Quays to become the place to be and a real neighbourhood hangout. It’s a beautiful building, full of history and lovely architectural details, but renovated in a modern way.”

The 5,000 sq ft bar and restaurant will seat 90 diners alongside a generous bar area, with further phases planned to bring the total footprint up to 9,000 sq ft. On the way are two private dining arches (space for 40), a 200-capacity ballroom for weddings and parties, and an outdoor patio overlooking the water. Forty local staff have already been recruited to the team.

On the menu, expect a playful mix of global comfort food and British pub classics, with an emphasis on sharing plates. Highlights include the brand’s signature Detroit-style deep dish pizzas and the Canadian staple poutine, while cocktails – created with Diageo mixologists – nod to Sheffield’s rich musical heritage.

The space promises to offer a contemporary spin on the classic pub, blending the modern style of the venues established in North America with a more traditional British setting. It has been designed with ‘laidback steampunk vibes’ in mind, creating a venue which aims to be playful, eclectic and offbeat.

The venue’s bulldog mascot, JD, takes pride of place on the logo – and yes, dogs are welcome, with their own menu courtesy of local boutique Ruby and Sophia’s.

Rene Ortiz, UK & Ireland Director for Northland Restaurant Group, added: “From the relaxed steampunk vibes and our playful bulldog mascot to surprising menu twists and throwback tunes, we can’t wait to show the people of Sheffield what The Tavern Collective is all about.

“We’re also delighted to be official sponsors of the mighty Sheffield Steelers – in homage to our Canadian roots and our love of ice hockey!”

To mark the opening month, the venue will be running introductory offers, including £1 off every pint of Madri or Alpacalypse, Happy Hour and late-night deals, plus a lunchtime deep-dish pizza slice for a fiver.
