New proposals have been unveiled to renovate the former Sheffield Ski Village. From gravity powered karts to a potential surf wave experience, Skyline Enterprises is hoping to revive the Parkwood Springs area. Public consultation is now open and they want to hear from you before the closing date of Sunday 20 September.
As of right now, here’s everything you need to know.
1. Who are Skyline Enterprises?
Skyline Enterprises is a New Zealand based global leader in adventure tourism and visitor experiences. In 1966, they built the first and steepest Gondola in the Southern Hemisphere. Now their unique, gravity-based experiences are offered across four continents.
2. It’s set to be a major leisure and outdoor adventure centre
The plans aim to transform the current Parkwood Springs site into a major leisure and outdoor adventure centre. A planning application is expected to be submitted by the end of the year. As part of the plan, existing walking and mountain bike trials will be retained or carefully relocated where necessary so public access will remain throughout the site.
3. There’s going to be Sheffield’s first gravity-fed downhill karting
The development has been split into phases, the first includes introducing Skylines signature gravity-fed downhill karting (Skyline Luge) alongside a scenic chairlift and an indoor educational attraction.
4. The views are going to be utilised
Expect a café with a terrace overlooking Sheffield. There will also be a free, outdoor plaza and family playground as well as a customer car park.
5. We could even see a zipline and surf wave experience
Skyline are hoping to introduce a zipline and surf wave experience with long term ambitions to reintroduce the dry ski slopes in recognition of the sites historic skiing heritage.
