90s Britpop legends Babybird have recently announced they’ll be returning to Sheffield as part of a small UK tour.
The band, who were formed here in 1995, are best known for the iconic hit single ‘You’re Gorgeous’ and announced the new string of live dates following a reunion in December last year.
Back in the early days, lead singer Stephen Jones was said to have written around 400 songs while on the dole in his Sheffield flat. In 1996 the band signed to Echo Records and debut single ‘You’re Gorgeous’ peaked at No 3 in the UK Chart, leading to the band producing two more hit singles in ‘Candy Girl’ and ‘Barbershop’.
Following poor album sales for their third album, Bugged, the band were dropped by their record label and split in 2000. Nine years later a reformation produced the album Ex-Maniac, which saw none other than Johnny Depp – a big fan of the band – making a cameo guitar appearance on the track ‘Unloveable’.
The Babybird – Back Together Again show hits Plug on May 19th. Tickets available here.
