Manchester-born artist Aya Bleu integrates R&B-rooted vocals with a pop sound to create a compelling voice in the city. Her recent single ‘Pressure’ shows her ability to craft songs that truly resonate with her listeners. We’ve grabbed her for a quick chat to hear about her life as a musician.

The first record I bought….
The first record I bought was by Charlotte Church, and it was her ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ album. I was absolutely obsessed with it.

My first gig….
I can’t actually remember my first ever gig, but I presume it would have been at school, as I was involved in lots of productions. I remember singing ‘Fields of Gold’ by Eva Cassidy in the school hall and making my music teacher, Mr. Corrigan, cry — from that moment on, I think I knew I had something.

A song I wish I’d written..
There are so many amazing songs I wish I’d written, but ‘Remember’ by Becky Hill would be at the top of my list.

I first fell in love with music when…
I first fell in love with music when I saw Leona Lewis win The X Factor in 2006. I’d always loved music, but that was the moment I first remember wanting to pursue it.

A song I can’t get out of my head at the minute…
One song I can’t get out of my head at the moment is ‘Do What I Say’ by KWN — I think that probably goes for everyone right now.

A record which reminds me of a specific time and place…
A record that reminds me of a specific place would be ‘Alone With You’ by Arz; it brings back some really nice memories for me.
