Orchard Square street food dining experience Sheffield Plate has welcomed American chicken merchant, Wing Kings to its line-up of local, independent vendors and bars this week.
Launched 8 years ago by former Sheffield Sharks star Olu Babalola, Wing Kings was born out of Olu’s desire to bring the American soul food he experienced while training and playing in South Carolina to the streets of Sheffield.
A self-confessed feeder, Olu has always had a keen interest, and taken great solace, in food and cooking, often choosing to spend time in the kitchens helping the head chef at his US University restaurant, affectionately known to everyone as ‘Mama’.
After years of pleading, Mama finally gave Olu her much protected chicken seasoning recipe before he returned to the UK, handed down to her from her mother who had been a head cook at a local plantation.
That very same recipe is served today from Wing Kings, which offers an array of mouth-watering chicken dishes to customers alongside a choice of 15 sauces.
Commenting on opening at Sheffield Plate, Olu said: “We are really excited to be joining the team at Sheffield Plate. Come and see us soon to try the best wings and soul food in town!”
Spanning two floors in Orchard Square, Sheffield Plate offers a range of food from around the world, as well as from across the UK.
Shay Murray, Manager at Orchard Square, said: “We are really proud to showcase a diverse range of food, drink and entertainment to suit all tastes at Orchard Square’s Sheffield Plate – and we’re delighted to be welcoming Wing Kings as part of that line-up.
“Sheffield Plate is known as the ‘one stop shop’ food destination within the city, bringing together an exciting, unique and inclusive offer of independent food operators, right in the heart of the city centre.”
Wing Kings at Sheffield Plate, which will be hosting Wing Kings Wednesdays and Soul Food Sunday Dinners, will offer a range of chicken dishes to include wings, strips and sandwiches alongside fries, mac and cheese and vegetarian options.
Wing King joins Niko Niko, Japanese food, Thai Kitchen serving Thai street food; Rumba specialising in Peruvian food, Shoot the Bull serving rotisserie and grill, Columbo serving Sri Lankan street food – and the Motore Café coffee cart.
