With a brand new menu boasting 220 different rums and already deemed “the most comprehensive of its type in the country,” Sheffield’s Cubana Tapas Bar is preparing for a boom in rum sales that’s predicted to hit Britain.
After the bar’s 2016 rum selection was voted UK’s best, it took Cubana’s rum master John Wickham another year and a half to come up with one good enough to beat it. Following the praise received at the industry launch, it’s safe to say he’s achieved it.
The bar’s extensive collection has been sourced from all around the globe, not just traditional spots like Cuba and the Caribbean, but also more surprising places such as Japan and Germany.
Rum industry expert Peter Thornton from Cellar Trends said: “There’s no doubt rum is on the ascendancy in the UK and there’s few venues doing more to promote its popularity than Cubana. This new menu will be a hard act to follow.”
With the rum sales now going over £1 billion a year and are expected to rise more, the spirit is said to repeat the success of gin in the UK.
Adrian Bagnoli, Cubana’s co-owner, said: ““All the signs are there that rum will have a massive explosion in the UK – we’ve seen a 100% increase in sales over the past year. I’m here to ensure Sheffield is the country’s leader.”
