Sheffield’s up-and-coming industrial district, Kelham Island, is welcoming a new venue this July. The Saw Grinder’s Union will be opening in the former steel works factory Globe Works on Penistone Road, and is set to pay the appropriate homage to the rich heritage of the area. Opening its doors to the public on July 4th, the café, bar, and restaurant will offer a new drinks and dining experience. Right in the heart of Sheffield, this bustling area is no stranger to a bar or restaurant, or two and The Saw Grinder’s Union is expected to only add to the dynamic of Kelham Island. The owner, James Rodgers, has made it clear that “we’re intent on building upon the community we have in this part of the city, and want to offer a welcoming space where people can get together, share some tasty food and enjoy quality drinks.”

Indulgent comfort food classics such as steak, poutine and mac and cheese are on offer, but the real star of the show is the array of gooey fondue melting pots. Diners, including vegans, are encouraged to embark on their very own cheesy adventure. This is a real social dining experience, “It’s renowned for being enjoyed in a communal setting among family and friends, and is perfect for dipping, dunking and sharing.”

The venue will showcase a variation of handpicked craft beers from independent brewers, including St Mars of the Desert, Magic Rock, Northern Monk and Beavertown. As well as catering for the strong presence of beer lovers and connoisseurs in Kelham Island, a handful of carefully curated cocktails (unique to the venue) will be available.

The installation of the La Marzocco KB90 machine and stock of Extract Coffee is setting the business apart from the crowd. As the only coffee shop in Sheffield to stock this brand, a brand that prides itself on sourcing the beans ethically from farmers, coffee lovers are sure to be flocking to the venue to get their fix of this world class brand. If this isn’t already enough, a wide range of cakes and pastries from Sheffield’s finest 4eyes Patisserie will be also be served up.

“We’re so excited to hear what people think when they see how the venue has been restored!” The Grade II listed Globe Works, which dates back to 1824 and holds the title of being one of the world’s first large scale specialist steel manufacturing centres, has undergone extensive renovation in the preparation of the new venture. The building is part of the Kelham Island Conservation Area, and a wealth of local manufacturers have been used to keep the project close to the community and industrial roots of the area. Head down and see what they have been working on when they open to the public on July 4th.
