A new cocktail bar and restaurant is opening in the final vacant unit of the recently refurbished former National Union of Mineworker’s building opposite Sheffield City Hall.
If the plans are accepted by the council, MOJO could be bringing its unique cocktail bar to the Steel City after successful openings in Leeds, Manchester, Liverpool, Nottingham and Harrogate. Mojo will likely open from midday until late, enabling Mojo to serve lunch and dinner.
A planning statement submitted as part of the application said: “The proposed restaurant and cocktail bar use and extended opening hours are appropriate to the city centre context and will complement and contribute to the commercial mix and enhance the vitality and viability of Sheffield centre.”
Speaking to Exposed, director Mojo Martin Greenhow said: “MOJO is excited to be able to breathe life into the final element of an iconic city centre building. We are delighted to have this opportunity to finally work in a city with such a rich musical heritage.”
The original building involved Arthur Scargill, the former president of National Union of Mineworkers. The NUM occupied the building for just four years from 1988 to 1992 before moving to Barnsley. The building then stood empty for more than two decades and was threatened with demolition in 2006 until both Turtle Bay and Pitcher and Piano opened up in the summer of 2018, bringing a colourful new late-night area to the city centre.
