Back in July 2018, Kollider Social announced that a number of Sheffield’s finest independent businesses were coming together to create a food hall in the iconic former Co-Op building on Castlegate.
Kollider, the regeneration company tasked with revitalising the building, announced the likes of Peddler, Tamper Coffee and the Depot Bakery would be joining forces to spearhead what Tamper’s Jonathan Perry described as more than just a food hall. “This will be a place of constant innovation, a place to celebrate great food every day, whether that be a simple sandwich or a tasting menu from one of the UK’s leading chefs. We believe in the power of great food and great social spaces to bring people together.”
Information since the announcement has been thin on the ground, but the details are sputtering through ever so slightly as Castlegate’s renovation rumbles on. The food hall, named Kommune, has more recently been described by Kollider as an “innovative concept bringing together some of the most acclaimed, independent kitchens, brewers and retailers in a unique, urban space”.
As part of the project, Kollider promised to retain some of the original features of the building, including the aesthetically-pleasing staircase that runs vertically through the many floors of Castle House. Rather than dust off the cobwebs and throw a bit of polish on it, what sounds like the main feature of Kommune will be this feature itself: The Staircase Bar, serving up a range of local beers, organic wines and an eclectic mix of cocktails.

As for the food aspect of Kommune, there will be 10 ‘kiosks’ manned by independent foodie traders plus an ‘artisanal bakery’, which goes some way to understanding the “vibrant, all-day dining experience” the food hall is described as by Kollider.
An opening date for Kommune is still yet to be announced, as is the case with the food traders involved with the 10 independent-based kiosks. Keep an eye on Exposed for the latest updates as they come.
