Just two doors down from the busy McDonald’s on the High Street, plans for its American burger chain and fast-food rival Wendy’s have been taking shape in the vacant home of a former phone shop.

After disappearing from the UK for 20-years, loaded Baconator, Jr. Bacon Cheeseburger and their famous frosty desserts are set to make a comeback in Sheffield next month thanks to Square Burgers Limited.

The new site is part of ambitious plans to open even more restaurants in Sheffield and Lincolnshire, eventually hoping to accomplish 300-400 restaurants in the UK. The franchisees also have plans to open more restaurants in the Greater Manchester and Liverpool area.

President and chief development officer of Wendy’s, Abigail Pringle said: “British customers have been eagerly asking when Wendy’s is coming to the north, and we’re excited to open a new restaurant in Sheffield soon. We’re also thrilled to welcome Square Burgers Limited to the Wendy’s family, the first franchise partner to open a traditional Wendy’s restaurant in the UK. They will be an integral partner as we continue to grow the brand across this region.”

Permissions have been requested to install new illuminated signs, ventilation, heating and to rework the shop front. The basement and first floor will be occupied but upper floors remaining unoccupied.

Although there is no set open date, Wendy’s are expecting to open its doors in mid-December.
