NO HOLDS BARD

Gibraltar Street venue Shakespeares certainly knows how to throw a Fringe at Tramlines party. On Friday, the famous ‘Bards Bar’ will put the sturdiness of one of the city’s oldest pub roofs to the test, hosting hard-rocking bands GUTS, Queen Cult, Mouthparts and Dearthworms. Saturday will feature plenty of local talent, courtesy of promoters Jarred Up, including some of Exposed Mag’s top picks: Drastic//Automatic, Any Old Iron and Flat Stanley. Go get some.

GETTING MOSHY IN THE WASHY

If you like your live music loud and in sweaty confines, there’s no better place than Sheffield’s fabled riff-heavy boozer The Washington. Once again, their Fringe at Tramlines lineup showcases some of the finest alternative acts in the city, including the return of much-loved rock ‘n’ roll duo Hot Soles on Saturday eve, followed on Sunday by seven-piece jazz/funk/afro/dub band We Hate the Sharkman and a “secret set” from a mystery guest which has set tongues wagging. Once the bands have cleared off, the venue’s resident DJs will keep that party going until 4am. Steady away now.

ALL ABOARD!

The Dorothy Pax team are well known for throwing some of the best bashes of the weekend. For this year’s The Fringe at Tramlines, they will be returning to their home at the quayside with Canal-Lines – an unmissable lineup of live artists, DJs and general top-notch vibes. During the mini-fest weekend, you can enjoy fast-paced grunge-pop from Bean Weavil, dark new wave disco punk from Speed for Lovers and suave, atmospheric rock ‘n’ roll from Galloping Dick. With live music taking place from Thursday through to Sunday, it’s certainly worth popping down to the quays for a nosey.

A BLESSED EVENT

This year marks an exciting collaboration with Sheffield Cathedral as the Chill Foo Front celebrates its 30th Anniversary Stage on the Cathedral Forecourt.
The all-new Cathedral Stage, running from midday to 8pm on Saturday 27th July, will be hosted by Chillout Simpson and supported by the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation. The event promises a lively street party featuring food stalls and a diverse lineup of DJs, dance crews and open mic sessions, offering a vibrant mix of Afrobeats, Hip Hop, R’n’B, Dancehall, Soul, Soca, and Garage music.

DANCIN’ ON DEV GREEN!

Alan Deadman (AKA Papa Al) presents the Tramlines Fringe Stage on the 27th & 28th of July on Devonshire Green. The stage, funded by The Bid Group and Sheffield Council, with help from the Sarah Nulty Power of Music Foundation, promises great outdoor live music and DJs on Saturday, 12–9pm, and Sunday, 12–7pm. Expect the return of festival favourites including soul blasters Highway Child, electro-funk crew Speed For Lovers, lovers rock and reggae from Chazzlyn, Eneta, and Big Megla, uptempo reggae and funk from the Solar Live Society hippy collective, and show-closing skamania from Jungle Lion.

Keeping the pot boiling are emerging youth talent Good Damage, courtesy of Waterbear College of Music, and superbly talented vocalists from Tracks; the second coming of Jamaican dance master Ripton Lindsey; Celtic punk-rockers Shanghai Treason; and Motown movers Soul Battalion.

The Fringe Stage also digs deep into community music with the uplifting Shine Choir fronted by BBC vocal judge Lizzie Mack, the global sounds of Blue Street Brass, and the irrepressible Sparkle Sistaz. Let’s also celebrate our DJs, with three amazing women on decks: DJ Kom, DJ JuJu Master, and DJ Myna, and the lads DJ Izza Dancer, Ian Hodgson, and Papa Al.

Hosting the fun will be Sheffield’s Poet Laureate Danae Wellington on Saturday and Johnny Douglas on Sunday.
