The Treehouse recently announced they will be opening Sheffield’s first specialist board game café this autumn, introducing Sheffield to a trend that’s been gathering pace across the country over the past few years.
“What sets board game cafés apart from a pub or café with a few games in the corner is the range of what’s on offer and the fact the whole venue is set up to create the best place to play,” Ruth Haigh, one of the owners, told us.
They started a crowdfunding campaign which raised a whopping £3,878 for the opening!
The Treehouse will have a library of several hundred board games, ranging from classics like Chess and Monopoly to the sort of new designer releases being published in ever-greater numbers as the industry enjoys a boom.
They will also offer a menu of cakes, sandwiches, teas and coffees to keep customers going while they play, as well as alcoholic drinks including draught craft beer.
“We want The Treehouse to be place where people will put down their phones and have a great time doing something together. It’s absolutely not just for die-hard gaming fans – we’ll have staff to help people find the right the game for them and even teach the rules. It’s all about making board gaming more accessible,” said Ruth.
The Treehouse launched a campaign on crowdfunding site IndieGoGo earlier this month to an enthusiastic response, and will begin hiring staff in the next few weeks.
