The penultimate weekend at Night Kitchen saw the eagerly awaited Summer Bass Carnival taking over, and there was a huge turnout for what will be one of the last raves at the legendary venue. The night was a joint effort from Bluewave, Mud and Displace – a trio of Sheffield’s premier bass music promoters.
With a stellar line-up spread across three rooms, spanning three genres, and with more headliners than you can shake a stick at, it was a night to remember for all involved. The main room played host to an array of grime heavyweights culminating in an epic set by the iconic Sir Spyro. He has been in the game for over a decade now, and his selection of party bangers showed exactly why he’s so revered on the UK scene.
Sir Spyro was just the tip of the iceberg of talent on display, as in the main room fellow Rinse FM DJ Faze Miyake donned the decks alongside sets from Murlo and YGG (You Get Grime). The room was opened and closed with sets from Sheffield’s own Korra B2B Flint, who ensured the party both started and ended on the right track.
The basement saw dubstep legend and pioneer Hatcha perform a ’15 years of Dubstep’ set alongside very special guest Crazy D. The room was shaking throughout the whole set as Hatcha duly reminded everyone why he is one of the most biggest names in dubstep. Not content with just one legend on the decks, Kromestar, one of the sound’s originators, was also on the bill for this night and displayed his wide-ranging skills over the turntables. The room also played host to sets from Aztek and Contrl B2B Coe.
Unbelievably, there was still room for more with the Pipes Room hosting a Liquid Drum & Bass special. All the way from the Japan, Makoto was in town to headline the room and display his vast musical prowess. A resident of the scene for almost two decades, he ensured the room was packed to the rafters with a fluid, euphoric set. Sheffield drum & bass duo Motional also gave us a scintillating set whilst the room was opened and closed by the Displace Crew, who as per usual set the room alight with their vast collection of pure D&B gold.
