It’s June already, ladies and gents, so hopefully by the time this month’s issue goes to print the rain will have stopped and – fingers crossed – it will officially be beer garden weather.
We have another jam-packed month ahead in Sheffield, and lots of opportunities to get involved in what’s going on. If you are politically-minded and keen to support LGBT campaigns, pop along to one of (QASh) Queer Agenda Sheffield’s meetings which take place fortnightly at Sheffield Hallam. They also hold socials on the weeks in between at Café Latte – perfect if you want to meet new people in a more informal setting.
Action for Trans Health will also be holding a meeting at Hallam on 7th June, open to anyone whose gender identity isn’t wholly the same as the one they were assigned at birth. They will also be hosting Otter Lieffe’s Margins and Murmurations book tour on 14th June, again at Hallam University. Written by a trans woman and sex worker, this brand new novel puts transgender, sex work and femininity at the centre of a twisting, multi-layered narrative. During this event Otter will be reading from the book and signing copies. She will also introduce ‘Screaming Queens: The Riot at Compton’s Cafeteria’ by Victor Silverman and Susan Stryker – a powerful documentary about transgender women and drag queens who fought police harassment at Compton’s Cafeteria in San Francisco’s Tenderloin in 1966, three years before the famous riot at Stonewall Inn bar in NYC
The Kingdom Come, Sheffield’s finest drag king night, is back on 3rd June with their holiday camp edition featuring a hefty dose of silliness, singing, lip-syncing and dancing. There will also probably be pineapples and definitely cake. Put on your holiday best, because we’re all going on a summer holigay! Gender-bending costumes encouraged! It will be surreal. It will be fabulous. All hail the King.
Whether you prefer a more chilled out afternoon to a big night out, or if you are looking for somewhere to nurse your hangover from the night before, then head down to Sheffield BiSocial’s board games day at Café Latte on 4th June. Anyone is welcome to attend.
We’re also now officially on the countdown to the city’s biggest LGBT event of the year, Pride Sheffield. They will be holding an open meeting at Charles Street on 29th June, so head down if you want to find out more about what is planned for the festival this year.
