So. Cheese. Let’s face it – most people eat it, which is why you’ll probably be euphoric when we tell you that Sheffield’s very own Cheese Fest will be landing in November. The event takes place in Plug on Saturday 25th November, so make sure you get down there to taste the classics as well as find some new favourites. Expect melted raclette, gooey mozzarella sticks, mouthwatering mac & cheese and halloumi fries. Not only will there be cheese, but there also be a selection of wine, craft beers and port.
Take a look at their website here for more information.
“If you could only eat one type of cheese for the rest of your life, what would it be?”
It’s a tough question, but someone’s gotta answer it…
It seemed only fitting that we ask some of Sheffield’s biggest cheese enthusiasts to tackle this all-important question. Here’s what they had to say…
Porter Brook Deli supply the people of Sheffield with some of the finest cheeses, locally sourced from Sheffield, Yorkshire, Derbyshire and further afield. They also sell indulgent ice creams, cakes, jams, olives, chutneys and much, much more. You can find them down on Sharrow Vale Road to browse your way through all 60 cheeses, ask for recommendations and even sample a few!
“At the moment it would be Summer Field made by Alistair Pearson at the Botton Camphill Community in the North Yorkshire Moors. It is a Yorkshire version of Alpine cheeses like Gruyere. It can only be made in the summer and uses unpasteurised, organic milk from their own Dairy Shorthorn cows. I love it.” – Nick Peck from Porter Brook Deli.
Bawtry Cheese Cave, close to Doncaster and Sheffield, is a small shop with a bucketful of enthusiasm for all things cheese. This deli has hosted birthdays, cheese and wine evenings and even produced a cheese cake – like, an actual cake made entirely of cheese – for a customer’s wedding. They give a lot of people an excuse to come and indulge in some seriously dairy goodness, so be sure to stop by and say hi. You might just leave with some of your favourites…
“Agghhh! That’s the worst question! It would have to be a blue and if I was forced (like gun to my head) to choose just one, I would say Colston Bassett Stilton. Now I feel like I’ve betrayed all my other cheeses! For balance, Josie our Saturday girl is a massive goat’s cheese fan and would eat Dorstone until the end of time!” – Nicky Kay from Bawtry Cheese Cave.
If you can’t wait until November for Cheese Fest now that we’ve got you thinking about cheese (and we wouldn’t blame you), then you should check out Homage 2 Fromage here. Every month they hold a cheese club at Tamper Coffee where you can try different types of cheese accompanied by bread, crackers, fruits and chutneys. The aim of the club is to celebrate great cheese in an informal fun way and the theme changes each time. and this month it’s Farmhouse Cheese.
