The Kell Brook comeback looks to be well and truly alive after promoter Eddie Hearn suggested that a fight with Liverpudlian Liam Smith is in the offing. Given that Brook had been out of the ring for 14 months and very much considered a has-been before he knocked out Mark Deluca in early February, this does indeed come as very positive news for the man from Sheffield.
Where the fight will take place has yet to be announced, but there is a feeling that Brook may have to make his way down to Liverpool to square up against one of the city’s favourite boxing sons. Smith is very much a man in the prime of his boxing life, despite losing as recently as 2018 to Jaime Munguia via a unanimous decision. It has to be said that on the night, Smith was completely outclassed by the Mexican but since then, the man from Liverpool has been on the up and up.

Indeed, it has been three wins from three fights with two of those bouts won by way of technical knockout. On current form, it does seem like Brook may well have his hands full when these two meet to do battle.
The 33-year-old Sheffield champion has had his troubles over the last year and a half and a fight with Liam Smith has the potential to spell retirement for Brook should he get knocked out. In fact, Brook’s journey over the last few years does show what a fickle game boxing can be when you consider that he hadn’t lost a professional bout up until 2016 after he made his debut in 2004. The problem was that Brook lost the next fight directly after that as well to Errol Spence Jr at Bramall Lane, which left the Sheffield-born warrior staring down the barrel.
It’s a cruel game alright because up until then Brook had enjoyed a faultless career after not putting a foot wrong. It just reinforces the lesson in boxing that one heavy defeat can see your career go up in smoke. Just look at the most recent example of that and how precarious Deontay Wilder’s career prospects look now after losing to Tyson Fury. It won’t be easy for the 34-year-old American to turn it around when you realize that he is at odds of 5/2 in the latest boxing betting to beat Fury when they go toe-to-toe again for the third time. Should Wilder lose once more, that could in fact be all she wrote for the Alabama native.

Most boxing fans would agree that the same fate awaits Kell Brook should he fail to win against the dangerous Liam Smith.
Having said that, Kell Brook knows the score and has retired many opponents over the course of his illustrious career in the game. The man from Sheffield won’t need telling about the potential repercussions of a loss which means we can all expect to see Brook in the best shape of his life, fighting for his career when he meets Liam Smith.
