With World Cup action in Qatar dominating much of the football coverage in recent weeks – you could be forgiven for failing to remember the tight battle for promotion taking place atop the Championship table. With just ten points separating league leaders Burnley and the ninth-placed Preston – the Championship is once again proving itself to be one of the deepest and most competitive football competitions in the world.

However, it’s not only the race at the top of the table that is closely contested, with this season’s top goal-scorer shaping up to be a thrilling affair. With that in mind, read on as we take a look at the four favourites in the football betting at SkyBet.com odds to take out the Championship’s top scorer gong.

Ben Brereton Diaz

Registering nine goals so far this season, 23-year-old striker Ben Brereton Diaz has been in scintillating form for Blackburn Rovers. He’s been largely consistent throughout the year, as he has never gone more than three games without finding the back of the net. His performance against Rotherham in particular impressed, with the Chilean scoring two goals en route to a thumping 3-0 win at home.

For those who partake in a football bet, Brereton Diaz is the joint-favourite at 8/1 to record the most goals this season.

Viktor Gyokeres

The joint-favourite at 8/1 alongside Blackburn’s Brereton Diaz is Coventry City’s Viktor Gyokeres, whose nine goals in 19 games has seen him establish himself as one of the brightest up-and-coming prospects in the league. Just 19 years of age, the Swedish international finished the first half of the season in exceptional goal scoring form, recording goals in three consecutive games – of which included a brace against top six outfit Queens Park Rangers.

Despite Gyokeres’ brilliance upfront, Coventry still finds themselves mid-table. However, with two of their three games back from the World Cup break coming against opposition lower than them on the table, not only do they have a chance to improve on their position, but Gyokeres also has a golden opportunity to create some separation on the goal-scoring leaderboard.

Oliver McBurnie

Sheffield United striker Oliver McBurnie also has nine goals this season – a huge improvement on his 2021/22 campaign in which he failed to register a goal in 28 appearances. It appeared as though it was going to be much of the same when this season kicked off, with the 26-year-old not getting on the scoresheet in Sheffield’s opening three fixtures. However, from that point forward, he has been a consistent performer. McBurnie would go on to score nine goals over the next 14 matches, which included a double and an assist against the third-placed Burnley.

Iliman Ndiaye

If Sheffield’s McBurnie doesn’t score the most goals in the Championship this season – it could very well end up being his teammate Iliman Ndiaye who does. Similarly to everyone on this list, Ndiaye has nine goals this season, and currently sits as the fourth favourite at 14/1 to top the goal-scorers list at the conclusion of his campaign.

The attacking midfielder made a late charge up the leaderboard, with three goals in consecutive games against West Bromwich Albion, Bristol City and Burnley just weeks before the competition paused for the World Cup. If he can continue that form upon his return from international duties in Qatar – expect to see Ndiaye build on his breakout year at United.
