Once, there was a woman. The Duchess of Bedford, Anna Maria Rusell, to be precise. Feeling rather peckish between breakfast and dinner, she began to bring the practice of a tiny mid-afternoon snack, just a little treat, into the spotlight.

The “beverage”, a light meal accompanied by tea, have occasionally been enjoyed by the upper class stretching back to the 17th century, but she, in the early 19th century, really brought It home and turned it into the beloved tradition that we now today.

What does the ritual contain?

An afternoon tea is a delicate ritual, typically featuring a tiered stand brimming with the most exquisite finger sandwiches, warm scones with clotted cream and jam, and an array of sweet goods like pastries, cakes, and petit fours. Like we said, just a little treat. The tea, usually served in fine china, creates an atmosphere and elegance and refinement.

While black tea remains a classic, many also enjoy varieties like Earl Grey, Darjeeling or English Breakfast. The treats themselves can vary, too, but if you want to really dive deep into being traditional, you got to have cucumbers, cream cheese or smoked salmon in the mix. And no crust!

There’s lots more rules and etiquette to this, if you want to have a little gander.

How does it look like today?

Today, well, things are of course a bit less strict, though the basic atmosphere it creates is still cherished across the kingdom. It’s now often enjoyed as a special occasion or just as a chance to unwind and catch up with friends. Like a lively brunch, just on the other side of the clock.

The practice has clearly evolved over time. Many places now offer themed teas, vegan and gluten-free options, and even some sneaky afternoon tea cocktails. Doesn’t matter if you’re a seasoned tea lover or simply curious (or just a little peckish like Queen Victoria’s bestie), afternoon tea is a delightful way to savour some treats, enjoy good company, and feeling good knowing you’re soaking in a timeless cultural experience.
