Sheer fabrics ooze sophisticated chic, with an elegant appearance that dates back decades. Last year they dominated the runways, with designers such as Valentino, Saint Laurent, Burberry and Victoria Beckham all displaying a semi-transparent style. Barely-there, wispy designs are the perfect answer to spring/summer fashion, with lightweight, sheer fabrics that are great in warmer temperatures.

Despite how many times you may have seen sheer fabrics on the catwalk, it can be difficult to style yourself. How do you take the sheer trend and make it work for you? Here we offer some tips on how to wear sheer fabrics.

Layer sheer fabrics over opaque designs
This is one of the best tips if you’re new to wearing sheer fabrics, or if you’re not feeling quite so brave! Consider layering a sheer fabric over the top of opaque clothing; creating a unique look that becomes versatile and not too exposed.

Long-sleeved sheer tops are great over the top of a cami, or even worn underneath a t-shirt for a cool edge to your look. You can extend this style to dresses too.

If you’re feeling bold, or you need to take your sheer look from day to night, consider wearing full coverage knickers and a bralette underneath a sheer t-shirt dress.

Consider sheer underwear
Sheer fabrics don’t just have to be restricted to your outer garments. Sheer styles have been used in the design of knickers, creating a cheeky, suggestive look without actually baring all.

Look for sheer mesh panels on the back, or down the sides, for a glamorous take on your usual briefs. Sheer fabric can be used with almost any knicker style, from boy shorts to thongs and everything in between. Adding an element of femininity, it’s a subtle but eye-catching design feature.

Experiment with style and colour
Many will associate sheer fabric with black, offering a chic and understated appearance. The truth is that sheer fabrics work in a multitude of colours; for this time of year, look at pastels like pink or lilac for a sheer design that is right on trend. What’s more, sheer fabrics often work wonders when they’ve been embossed with a tonal print; think polka dots or faint stripes.

Adding extra detail to an otherwise simple look, you can instantly upgrade your look.

Don’t forget accessories
If you really want to dive into the world of sheer but just aren’t quite sure where to start, why not begin small and choose sheer accessories? Shoes have been a huge trend with sheer panels, creating a classy look to even the simplest of outfits; think sheer black court heels, or the modern ‘sock shoes’.

Similarly, scarves and tights are the most straightforward sheer accessories you could think of; invest in these and build your way up!
