Lake Moraine- A trip here isn’t just about sightseeing, it’s about connecting with the natural beauty of the Canadian Rockies. Imagine standing on a rock, feeling the fresh alpine air and the sun slowly rising over the Ten Peaks. That’s the beauty of Moraine Lake, one of the most enchanting places on Earth. Every corner of Moraine Lake feels like a postcard, whether it is The Ten Peaks, turquoise water or the quiet rustle of surrounding pine forests. Visitors can enjoy activities like canoeing, hiking, walking along the shore, and having a picnic.

Where Is Moraine Lake?

Moraine Lake in Banff National Park is known worldwide for its stunning turquoise color, surrounded by ten towering mountain peaks. A UNESCO World Heritage Site located in the Canadian Rockies. The beautiful lake sits at an elevation of about 1,885 meters (6,183 feet) surrounded by Ten Peaks, each mountain rising majestically above 3,000 meters. 

Distance from Lake Louise Village : 14 km (8.7 miles) from Lake Louise Village and around 70 km (43 miles) from Banff town.

How to Reach Moraine Lake (2025 Update)

Since 2023, private vehicles are no longer permitted as Parks Canada decided to protect the delicate environment and reduce overcrowding. Now, you have to take a shuttle, hike, or join a tour.

1. Parks Canada Shuttle:- Shuttle departs from Lake Louise Park and Ride (near Lake Louise Ski Resort). Tickets must be booked in advance on the Parks Canada Reservation System. Shuttles run from June to early October. 

 2. Commercial Tours & Private Shuttles:- There are many local operators such as Moraine Lake Bus Company, Roam Transit, and Mountain Park Transportation that offer guided tours. If you are looking for a flexible schedule then a private shuttle is the perfect option.

3. By Bicycle:- Cycling is another popular option to reach the Moraine Lake Road. This challenging route of approx 12.5 km one way is steadily uphill. 

Best Time to Visit Moraine Lake

Lake Moraine sits at a high elevation and remains frozen for most of the year and is only accessible between June and early October. It thaws in early June and reveals its famous turquoise hue, caused by sunlight. June to August is the perfect time for hiking, canoeing, and photoshoots as the lake is at its peak. From September to early October you will get comparatively cooler temperatures, incredible landscapes & beautiful golden larches. If you visit the lake at sunrise, you can witness the breath-taking Ten Peaks illuminated by the sunlight. 

Things to do at Moraine Lake

1. Hike the Rockpile Trail

The Rockpile Trail is short & family friendly. Every step you climb is unforgettable. A gentle 0.8 km hike leads you to the most famous view of the iconic Moraine Lake lookout. From here, you’ll see the entire lake surrounded by the Ten Peaks. With minimal efforts you are rewarded with breathtaking views.

2. Stroll the Lakeshore Trail

If you want to sit in peace and quiet, then take a 3 km round trip walk around the Lakeshore. Every step is worth taking.

3. Canoeing on Moraine Lake

You can rent a canoe from the boathouse & glide on the turquoise waters. The rental starts at $140 CAD plus tax for an hour. It fits up to three people. You can rent the canoe from  9:30 AM – 5 PM (weather permitting). 

4. Photographer’s Heaven

If you intend to discover a place more magnificent and awe-inspiring, it is hard. The scenery here is incredible and one of the most breathtaking globally. Every corner of Moraine Lake is photogenic, but the Rockpile Viewpoint at sunrise is unbeatable. Don’t forget to bring a tripod or simply enjoy the scene with your own eyes. Sunrise is a magical time at this beautiful Lake.

 5. Stay at Moraine Lake Lodge

Looking for an exclusive experience, then consider staying at Moraine Lake Lodge, a luxurious eco-lodge overlooking the lake. This lodge gives you an experience of rustic-chic cabins with fine dining. Early reservations are required as the lodge gets booked up in advance.

Quick Tips for visiting Moraine Lake 

  • Book your shuttle early: Park Canada releases 40% of the reservation in the operating season. The rest releases on a rolling window at 8 a.m., 48 hours before departure day. 
  • Arrive before sunrise: Lesser crowds and the best lighting for photos
  • Carry snacks and water: Besides the Lodge Cafe, there are no restaurants at Moraine Lake.
  • Dress in layers: Temperatures may vary throughout the day so it’s advisable to carry layers along.
  • Respect nature: Stay on marked trails and do not leave any traces behind.
