Working from home (WFH) is flexible and convenient. Remote workers should also be more productive than office-based employees — however, this is not always the case. Many people struggle to stay focused when WFH, especially when they’ve got lots of distractions at home. From TV to musical instruments, it can be easy to get distracted and waste working hours.
Fortunately, there are a few simple habits you can adopt to avoid getting distracted when working at home.
1. Limit Digital Distractions
Notifications, apps, and unrelated websites can easily prevent you from completing work. To avoid this, it would be a good idea to remove these completely from your workspace and save them for your break time. For example, you could play casino online games such as blackjack, poker, and slots on your morning break. On your lunch break, you could check Facebook, Instagram, and X. This will ensure your leisure time doesn’t impact your work hours.
2. Create a Dedicated Workspace
You can’t maintain concentration if you don’t have a dedicated workspace. Working from your couch won’t do — you need a desk and office chair, both adjusted to a comfortable height. Creating a dedicated workspace allows your brain to associate the space with productivity. Your couch is associated more with leisure and relaxation, which can impact your work ethic. It’s important to keep your desk neat and clutter-free to further boost productivity.
3. Stick to a Routine
By creating a routine, you can give your workdays structure and consistency. With greater consistency comes greater productivity. You can do this by starting and ending your workday at the same time every day. Take your breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the same time each day. Exercise first thing in the morning, at lunch, or as soon as you finish — whichever best suits you. Also, do the hardest tasks first thing, and tackle easier tasks in the afternoon when you have less energy and focus. By doing all of this every day, you should complete tasks faster.
4. Stay Connected With Your Team
Some people thrive when left alone. Others, however, get lonely and unproductive. If you’re part of the latter category, it’s essential for you to stay connected with your work team. Participate in meetings, message colleagues privately, and organize catch-ups outside of work. Socializing can boost your work ethic, gain a better understanding of ongoing projects, and generally help you feel more connected to your company.
5. Prioritize Your Wellbeing
One of the biggest benefits of WFH is that you have a lot more time to yourself. You’re not wasting time commuting to and from the office, which can save you hours per day. It’s important to put this extra time to good use. You could exercise, cook more complicated meals, and complete small errands. You should avoid sleeping in and waking up only when you need to work. While getting plenty of sleep is important, completing more non-work-related tasks is also good for your well-being.
