With many of our holiday plans unfortunately put on hold indefinitely due to the coronavirus pandemic, now is the ideal time to compromise with a summer staycation (we may as well enjoy the gardens we’ve all been redesigning during lockdown) and plan the big trip for 2021. So why not save some money this year and put it aside for the luxury safari holiday next year?
What does a staycation look like?
For some, it could quite literally mean taking the phone off the hook and spending a week in your pyjamas and for others, it might simply mean taking a holiday in the UK. It could even mean using your home as an operational base and exploring everything your local area has to offer without having to splurge on a hotel or any other accommodation.
You don’t need an exorbitant budget to have an incredible staycation. There are any number of things you can do to keep yourself and your family entertained without going abroad and even without leaving your home. Indeed, we should all have become experts at creating our own home-based entertainment in the last few months!
There are hundreds of staycation ideas you could pull from without risking breaking social distancing rules. For example, you could pitch a tent in your own back garden and pretend you’re on an adventurous camping trip or at a major music festival. Or, perhaps you could curate your very own festival, scheduling live shows on YouTube and keeping the fridge stocked with cold beers. Even simply holding a family movie night can be a lot of fun with the right mindset.
Planning for the big vacation in 2021
Planning for a future holiday is principally about two things – budgeting and planning. The former undeniably takes the most effort, as saving money doesn’t come naturally to some of us. But with lockdown still in place and a lack of compelling reasons to leave the house currently, it’s actually never been easier to save money.
Budgeting for a holiday is all about knowing exactly how much you need to save and making a plan that will help you reach that target. If you need to save £5,000 for a safari holiday or a trip to Disney World, for example, that’s around £500 you’ll need to put away each month between now and summer next year. Have this amount in mind and experiment with ways to save this money. You’ll be amazed how quickly you can find the extra pounds and pennies if you put your mind to it.
Planning, meanwhile, is all about the location and how you’re going to make those pounds and pennies go further when you get there. There is likely to be loads of last-minute holiday deals floating around in the months ahead, so that’s always an option, but if you know where you want to go and what you want to do, don’t compromise. 2021 has to be a good year, after all. Because, for most of us, 2020 will not be remembered fondly and we could all use something special on the horizon to keep us going. Like a trip to Amsterdam in the New Year, maybe?
