Smartphones are still relatively new technology but already they have gone through many phases to become some of the most advanced devices we possess. Around 35% of adults in the UK play games on their phones alongside or instead of consoles, and as smartphones become ever capable, this trend is set to increase during the rest of the decade.

Interested in exploring the world of mobile gaming? Here’s how to get started.

  1. Finding your games

Just as with the world of books, there’s huge variety when it comes to games, and finding your favourite genres and ways to play is key to getting into this pastime.

First, decide on your preferred format for gaming. Do you prefer playing alone, challenging others or collaborating with friends? This will help guide you to suitable options you’re likely to enjoy. From here, you can filter down further by type: there are endless options to choose from including fast-paced action, problem-solving adventure, role-playing games (RPGs) and simulation.

  • Choosing your device

While most smartphones these days can cope with running mobile games, if you’re planning on playing a lot of hardcore options you could consider a special gaming phone.

Equipped with high-end processors, an enhanced Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) and an active cooling system which helps to prevent overheating, these phones provide superior performance when running complex games programmes. They also tend to be bigger with wider screens and have a larger battery capacity so you can play for longer without needing to recharge.

However, don’t think that you need the latest gear to enjoy mobile gaming. You can access casual games like arcade games online via your browser or easy-to-run apps. These have low hardware requirements so but still promise plenty of fun.

  • Optimising your experience

If you’re enjoying using your smartphone as a gaming console, consider investing in accessories to enhance the experience further. You can get special mobile gaming controllers for the smoother movement of characters and objects and headphones for improved sound quality, both connectable via Bluetooth. Using an ergonomic chair while you play will make you more comfortable and provide important support for your back during extended sessions.

You don’t need extra accessories to boost your experience. You can adjust the game settings to optimise the display, changing the light levels to suit where and when you’re playing and shifting the frame rate speed for optimised rendering.

  • Staying safe online

When you’re playing games via your phone, employ the same safety measures you would when browsing the internet or communicating in live video game chats. Keep personal details private, especially financial information, and beware malicious links sent by cybercriminals. Consider using a VPN when playing online and avoid using public Wi-Fi networks to protect your private data.
