More marriages in Sheffield go the distance than any other city in South Yorkshire. According to the latest Office for National Statistics data, only 8.7% of marriages per 1,000 individuals in Sheffield ended in 2022. That’s almost 2% lower than Doncaster (10.6%), where divorce rates are highest in the region. Even though those figures are the lowest since the 1970s, they’re above the national average of 6.7% per 100 married individuals.

None of us want to think about divorce, and thankfully, most people don’t have to. However, life is unpredictable, and a once harmonious relationship can break down for any number of reasons. If you find yourself going through a divorce, there is an unwanted but necessary plethora of things you need to take care of.

Divorces Create Practical Issues

They’re unwanted because you’re probably dealing with a variety of emotions. However, they’re necessary because divorces are as much of a legal issue as an emotional one. The first thing you need to do is apply for a divorce. You and your partner can do this, or you can leave it to your respective solicitors. You’ll need to explain the divorce and cover any admin fees. After that, decisions need to be made.

As noted on gov.UK, “You need to divide your money and property. If you want this to be legally binding, you must apply to a court before finalising legal paperwork to divorce or end your civil partnership”. This is where the advice of experts is vital. Dividing up cash assets is fairly simple, but problems can occur when it comes to agreeing on who has rights to a property. As noted on webuyanyhome.com, the person on the deeds doesn’t necessarily have sole rights to the house.

In an ideal world, the two parties agree on a fair split. However, in some cases, there are disputes when it comes to selling a house after a divorce. If those disputes can’t be resolved, a judge has to intervene. In general, a judge will rule that the house has to be sold and the proceeds split in certain ways. Alternatively, they might rule that one party gets to live in the house and pay the other party a lump sum.

Don’t Prolong the Pain

This process, known as a financial remedy order, can take up to a year. Therefore, it pays to sort things out before it gets to court. If this involves a sale, speed is crucial because there are so many other things to sort out. Therefore, you don’t want to spend more time than necessary arranging the sale of a property, which, as we all know, can take months.

There are companies that will purchase your property and distribute the funds within seven days. That’s significantly faster than the 114 days it takes, on average, to sell a property in the UK. The point here is that you can alleviate some of the stress involved in a divorce by working with experts and understanding the options available to you.

Times have changed. Even though divorce rates are lower than they’ve been for decades, marriages still end, and there are ways to streamline the process. So, if you find yourself among the 8.6% of people in Sheffield who get divorced, get expert advice, don’t be petty and use all of the resources at your disposal to make it as pain-free as possible.
