Hemp has grown across the UK for rope, rigging, and clothes, and its return to shop shelves has come through a different route. Instead of fibre or seed, growers and processors are now focusing on the compounds found in the plant’s leaves and flowers. Those compounds are separated through a series of technical steps before they reach a bottle, and the process behind that separation is rarely explained in detail. So, this article sets out how CBD extract is produced, from the cultivation of the hemp plant through to the finished product on a shelf.
Growing and Harvesting the Hemp Plant
UK-grown hemp intended for CBD extract is sown from EU-approved seed varieties with low THC content, and it is cultivated under a Home Office licence before a single seed goes into the ground. Plants mature across a growing season that runs from spring to early autumn, and the flowers and leaves, where the majority of cannabinoids develop, are harvested once trichome development reaches full maturity.
After cutting, the plant material is dried and cured under controlled conditions, as moisture left in the biomass can affect the quality of the extract produced later in the process.
Extraction Methods Used to Produce CBD Extract
Once the hemp has been dried, processors choose one of several extraction methods, and each method draws the cannabinoids out of the plant material in a different way. Some rely on pressurised gas, others on solvents, and the choice affects the purity and cost of the finished extract.
The methods below are commonly applied across UK and European facilities.
CO2 Extraction
Carbon dioxide is pressurised into a supercritical state, where it behaves like both a liquid and a gas, and passed through the plant material to draw cannabinoids free without leaving solvent residue behind. The pressure and temperature applied during this process can be adjusted to target specific compounds, which allows processors to separate cannabinoids from waxes and chlorophyll at the point of extraction. Once the pressure is released, the carbon dioxide returns to a gas and evaporates away, leaving the extract behind.
Ethanol Extraction
Food-grade ethanol is soaked through the biomass to pull cannabinoids into solution, and the mixture is then evaporated off, leaving a concentrated oil that needs further filtration. Ethanol works at room temperature or below, so processors often chill the solvent first, which limits how much plant fat and chlorophyll dissolve alongside the cannabinoids. This method also scales well across large batches of biomass, making it a common choice for processors working with sizeable hemp harvests.
Oil Extraction
Lipid infusion uses a carrier oil such as olive oil, coconut oil or medium-chain triglyceride oil to draw cannabinoids out of plant material. The hemp is decarboxylated first through gentle heating to activate compounds such as CBD, and it is then mixed with the carrier oil under controlled heat for several hours, which allows the cannabinoids to dissolve into the fat molecules. Because the resulting oil cannot be concentrated further without removing the carrier oil itself, this method produces a milder extract used mainly in small-batch and home settings and less often in commercial manufacturing.
Refining Crude Extract
The oil pulled from the plant straight after extraction is known as crude extract, and it carries plant waxes, chlorophyll and other compounds alongside the cannabinoids. This crude material moves through several further steps before it becomes usable in consumer products, and each step plays a specific part in shaping the final extract.
Winterisation
The crude extract is mixed with ethanol and chilled to sub-zero temperatures, causing waxes and lipids to solidify so they can be filtered out. The mixture is left at this temperature for a set period, which allows the solid plant fats to separate fully from the dissolved cannabinoids. Once filtered, the ethanol is evaporated away, leaving an oil that is lighter and less prone to clouding than the crude material it came from.
Decarboxylation
The extract is heated at a controlled temperature to convert acidic cannabinoid compounds such as CBDA into their active forms, including CBD. This conversion happens through a chemical reaction that releases carbon dioxide from the cannabinoid molecule, and the temperature and duration are monitored closely, as excess heat can degrade the compounds it is meant to activate. The process is applied after winterisation, once the extract has already been cleared of waxes and plant lipids.
Filtration
The oil is passed through activated carbon or clay filters to remove remaining plant pigments, leaving a clearer, lighter-coloured extract. The filter material adsorbs chlorophyll and other coloured compounds as the oil moves through it, and several passes may be used depending on how much pigment remains after winterisation. This final stage does not alter the cannabinoid content of the extract, as it targets colour and residual plant matter rather than the compounds themselves.
Powdered CBD and Other Extract Types
Refined extract does not always stay as an oil, and further processing produces other extract types used across the market. Powdered CBD is one such type, made by isolating CBD from all other plant compounds and crystallising it into a fine, white powder that is measured by weight and not by volume.
Full-spectrum extract, by comparison, retains a wider range of cannabinoids and terpenes found naturally in the hemp plant. In contrast, broad-spectrum extract falls between the two, keeping several plant compounds and removing THC entirely. Each type suits a different manufacturing need, from capsules and tinctures through to topical products.
Testing and Regulation in the UK
Every batch of CBD extract produced for sale in the UK passes through testing before it reaches a consumer, and this testing checks cannabinoid content alongside contaminants such as heavy metals, pesticides and residual solvents.
