From the live gigs and colourful murals splashed on the walls to that perfect pint at the cozy local pub, there’s no place quite like Sheffield. Or is there?

If you’re thinking about swapping Sheffield for the Mediterranean for a week or two, you might be surprised at how easily you could feel right at home in these coastal cities.

Music That Travels

Sheffield has always marched to the beat of its own drum, and the city’s musical roots run deep. But the Def Leppard stadium anthems and Arctic Monkeys bangers don’t need to stay behind when you pack your bags for warmer shores.

Even when boarding a cruise bound for the Mediterranean, you’ll find live bands playing familiar favourites that bring Sheffield to mind.

Barcelona should be your first stop if music runs through your veins. Head to Las Ramblas to enjoy the many street performers and a vibe that can rival a gig at Leadmill. You can also try the Palau de la Música Catalana venue, where the architecture alone tells stories of musical history spanning centuries.

Venice is another prime stop for music lovers. The piazzas, like San Marco, have live music throughout the day, with violins and soft guitars creating a chilled-out vibe. If you want something a bit more lively, head out to Campo Santa Margherita, where the atmosphere feels like a Sheffield night out, just with Italian flair.

And if you find yourself in Amalfi, you’ll get to experience fado music, which is often performed in taverns such as Clube de Fado and Tasca do Chico.

Discovering New Street Art and Creativity

The same artistic spirit that you know and love about Kelham Island can also be found across the Mediterranean, and Lisbon is just one example. The city’s Bairro Alto and LX Factory districts are packed with striking graffiti and detailed tilework that rival Sheffield’s boldest walls.

Marseille in France is also worth mentioning. The old warehouses in the port area are home to some of the best giant murals in Europe. The latest mural of a lighthouse and the wording “I want to be what you saw in me” was painted by Banksy, a notoriously anonymous street artist.

Then there are the Psiri and Exarchia neighbourhoods of Athens, which are pretty much open-air galleries. One of the most famous works is the giant owl mural by WD (Wild Drawing), which is a nod to Greece’s ancient heritage.

Finding a Pub-Like Atmosphere Abroad

Pubs in Sheffield are like community living rooms, where neighbors become friends over shared pints. You’ll be happy to know that Mediterranean cities offer their own versions of this social tradition.

In Velleta, Malta, little bars like The Pub have an old-world British atmosphere that’ll make you feel like you never left home. Over in Dubrovnik, you’ll find plenty of small tavernas serving local wine and beer at wooden tables that you can share with locals. Lucin Kantun is a must-try.

Even in Palma de Mallorca, bars such as Moltabarra carry that familiar pub spirit. It’s all hearty drinks and a laid–back charm. Platja de Muro is also great if you want more of a beach vibe.

That Familiar Community Spirit Is Everywhere

Whether you choose to stay close to the Mediterranean ports or travel a little further inland, you’ll find snippets of Sheffield during your Mediterranean travels. Exploring these coastal destinations reminds you that while cities may differ in architecture and scenery, the heartbeat of the communities can feel very much the same.
