Being out in nature benefits us in many ways, physically and mentally. However, it’s sometimes difficult to go outdoors, especially if you’re busy or if you live in the big city. This is why home gardening is an ideal hobby to have at home, even in smaller apartments. A 2021 UK survey shows that gardening two to three times a week can help reduce stress, improve wellness, and increase physical activity. There are various ways to start your home garden and many plants that you can choose from as well. Here are some home gardening ideas to get you started.

Hang Some Air Plants

Air plants, or Tillandsia, are low maintenance plants that you can have in your home. They come in different sizes and shapes so you can hang them anywhere, or you can put them on top of clear glass bowls and display them on tables or shelves. They need indirect sunlight, and they only need to be soaked in water for two hours once a week or every 10 days. Air plants are known to photosynthesize at night, so you’ll have better air quality while you sleep.

Grow a Few Herbs

If you like using fresh herbs while cooking, try growing some herbs on your balcony. If you have a small space, there are so many ideas for planter boxes on balconies that you can consider, such as using hanging pots or repurposing some wooden pallets. Some of the easiest herbs you can grow are thyme, rosemary, and basil, and the best way to get good ones is to check out nurseries near you. You could also consider using deck rail planters to grow herbs on your balcony for a space-saving and convenient solution to having fresh herbs for cooking.

Herbs bought from nurseries are often tougher and would last longer since they have been sitting out in the open and exposed to the changing weather. Make sure to water them accordingly, give them enough space, and check them daily. Your efforts will be rewarded with something fresh to flavour your meals everyday.

Get Some Succulents

Succulents are ideal plants to have inside your home since they’re low maintenance and they don’t need a lot of care to thrive. They can also help you improve your focus and they can increase oxygen levels in your home. You can put them anywhere that has sunlight and they only need to be rotated once in a while, so that all the parts of the plant can equally have enough sun. You only need to water the soil once in a while too, and you can check by feeling the soil with your fingers whether it needs watering or not. There are many kinds of succulents you can choose from. Some of the easiest to start with are snake plants, Mexican snowball, elephant bush, and aloe vera. If you’re unsure about what to pick, consider getting two or three small succulents first and see how they’ll do in your home.

There are many ways you can bring in plants into your home, and you can start with small and hardy ones first before moving on to bigger plants that need more care and maintenance. Before deciding what kind of greenery you want to bring in, make sure to check what kind of plants would fit in your current lifestyle so you can enjoy gardening inside your home.
