Sheffield is, and has always been, a football city, but running in the background alongside that, across two codes and dozens of clubs, a rugby scene has taken root and refused to let go, producing moments of genuine drama that most Sheffielders probably don’t know about.

Sheffield’s Union Roots

Rugby union has been played in Sheffield since the early 1860s, with Sheffield RUFC, founded in 1902 and based at Abbeydale Park in Dore. They currently compete in National League 2 North and runs a thriving junior section from under 7s to colts.

Sheffield Tigers RUFC, founded in 1932, occupy roughly the same corner of the city and the same tier of the league pyramid, making the local derby a genuine fixture in the South Yorkshire rugby calendar.

The Sheffield Vulcans, an LGBTQ+ inclusive club founded in 2017 as part of the International Gay Rugby network, and the city’s hosting of a regional rugby sevens tournament in the summer months are a reminder that rugby in Sheffield has more dimensions than you might expect.

The Eagles

Sheffield Eagles were founded in 1984 in a city with no rugby league tradition and nearly folded in their first season. On 2 May 1998, none of that mattered as they faced the Wigan Warriors side at Wembley. The Eagles went on to win 17-8 at odds of up to 14/1, the biggest upset in Challenge Cup history.

Near-collapse followed almost immediately as attendances failed to rise after Wembley and finances collapsed. By 1999, the club was forced into a merger with Huddersfield Giants, but a phoenix club was reformed the same year.

In forty years they have played at 21 different venues, and this April announced yet another move, to the MEPS International Home of Football Stadium in Dronfield.

The Eagles now operate men’s, women’s, wheelchair and learning disability teams, and their community foundation has worked with thousands of young people across Sheffield since 2001.

Fan Culture

The Eagles’ supporter base is built around a fierce underdog identity, forged through decades of near-collapses and cemented by the 1998 Wembley win.

On the union side, the annual derby between Sheffield RUFC and Tigers often means more than the league position.

Underdogs

Rugby in this city has never had the recognition it deserves, competing for attention in a place where football dominates every conversation. What both codes share, though, is a resilience that tends to get forgotten between kick-offs at Bramall Lane and Hillsborough.
