To us Brits, the American culture of open-air and drive-through cinemas seems like a world away from how we do things. But several organisations have come together to make this a reality in our very own city!
Luna Cinema provides fleecy blankets and backrests for audiences, as well as ponchos in case the weather takes a turn for the worst – it is the UK after all.
On Friday 28th July, they will be pitching up at Chatsworth to screen the 2005 adaptation of ‘Pride and Prejudice’ – which is where parts of the film were actually shot. Stuff your face with Sicilian street food, courtesy of Sicilia Roots or tuck into their gourmet burgers and freshly-made pizzas cooked in an authentic wood-fired oven. Estrella will be there too, serving up soft drinks, Prosecco, and a choice of wines and spirits to help wash down your food. And if an Austen romance isn’t quite your cup of tea, you can head over there the following night for a showing of ‘Grease’. Same time. Same place.
Alternatively, you can head over to the Sheffield Amphitheatre on Wednesday 23rd August, where Luna Cinema will be screening ‘Top Gun’. The Amphitheatre promises to bring a touch of Ancient Greece to this cinematic experience, offering the buzz of the city as a unique and stunning backdrop to the evening as the sun sets and the streets start to light up. The following night (Thursday 24th August), they’ll be showing ‘Dirty Dancing’, so it’s a good job this amphitheatre is round, because NO ONE PUTS BABY IN THE CORNER.
Since launching in 2015, this pop-up cinema has been screening classic movie favourites in unusual places, from swimming pools and farms, to vacated warehouses and woodland spaces. They also arrange private cinema hire for special occasions, having so far catered for weddings, birthday parties, and business functions.
On Saturday 20th May, they successfully hosted a screening of ‘Moulin Rouge’ at the Abbeydale Picture House in Sheffield, and delighted movie-goers with foodie treats from Livvy’s Ice Cream, Proove Pizza, and The Gravy Train Poutine. Music, laughter, and a good ol’ classic film screening brought the Abbeydale Picture House back to life for one night only, so don’t miss out on their next event! If you aren’t opposed to a short drive away from the city, Summer Nights might have something that will tickle your fancy. On the 4th and 5th of August, they’ll be delighting audiences with ‘Dirty Dancing’ and ‘Robin Hood – Prince of Thieves’ at Clumber Park in Nottinghamshire. Explore the picturesque gardens, peaceful woodlands and the magnificent lake before settling down with a pre-ordered hamper from Hackwood Farm for that quintessential picnic experience. Bobby’s Bar and Flow Catering will also be on site serving cocktails, snacks, soft drinks, handmade pasties and desserts.
