Alumno and Home for Students are collaborating to launch a photography competition for students, supported by Photo North. The competition will ask entrants to reveal what community means today, what binds communities together, be that a place, tradition, religion, employment, sexuality, politics, hobbies – or conversely what divides communities within the Steel City. The competition is open to any student who lives in Sheffield, and participants can use portraits, still life, round images or documentary to reflect their interpretation of the brief.
Alumno are currently developing accommodation for 356 students in the iconic, post war housing estate Park Hill, which will open this September. They are using the competition to marking the mark this occasion. David Campbell, MD of Alumno, commented: “We are delighted to be bringing the Photo North competition to Sheffield. We see this is a great opportunity for students to connect to the city and express how they see it. We are excited to see the final pieces, and hope that the competition will encourage, and empower, many to get involved and offer us their view to their city.”
The best entrants the will have the opportunity to see their work exhibited at various venues across the city alongside award-winning photographer Peter Dench. The winner will also receive an hour mentoring / portfolio session with Peter Dench.
The competition is open now, with deadline for entries 16th March 2020. Winner and runners up from the competition will be unveiled on Wednesday 1st April at the Photo North Pop Up at The Park Hill Shop, Pinstone Street, Sheffield.
