Wentworth Woodhouse, a grade I listed stately home in Rotherham is set to showcase Gaia Earth, an exact, scaled replica of our planet, this weekend- marking the first time the touring artwork has ventured into Yorkshire territory.
This replica comes to Rotherham as part of the Wentworth and Elsecar Great Place project which aims to raise awareness for climate change through their We Wonder Noir night-time art festival, starting 3rd November.
Luke Jerram, artist and creator of Gaia, said that the art work was created to “communicate a sense of the fragility of our planet, as we urgently need to wake up, and change our behaviour to prevent runaway climate change.”
The glowing model of planet Earth, created by UK artist Luke Jerram, measures seven metres in diameter with each centimetre of the sculpture detailing at 18km of the Earth’s surface, as seen by NASA in space.
Gaia is calculated at 1.8 million times smaller than Earth and will be brought to life for the public by rotating every four minutes – 360 times faster than the real thing. This will be done to a composition by BAFTA winning composer, Dan Jones.
By standing 211m away from the model, the public will be able to see the Earth as it appears from the Moon.
The replica is open for free public viewing on selected dates from Sunday 3rd November to Monday 25th November.
Tickets for WE Wonder Noir (£12.50 adults, £5 for children 4-16, family tickets £30) and free tickets to Gaia are available through the event page on Eventbrite.
