Sheffield city centre-based Theatre and arts centre, Theatre Deli, has announced its first season since opening its new venue earlier this year.
From comedy, dance and improv, to music, games and poetry, an exciting mix of live performance returns to Theatre Deli from this week, kicking off with two alternative takes on Shakespeare: Queer Folio by 1632 Theatre Company (11th May) and King Lear’s Fool’s Tale by Bijou Productions (13th May).
The first season from Theatre Deli Sheffield’s new artistic team Daljinder Singh and Miranda Debenham, sees the return of the theatre’s renowned range of diverse, alternative performances from artists in Sheffield and beyond.
The programme will also include a new series of DeliPresents… events including Baby Comedy Club: comedy shows for new parents, and Dementia-Friendly Film Screenings. Sheaf Poetry Festival (27th-28th May) will take over the venue for a full weekend with award-winning authors such as Inua Ellams, Jen Hadfield, Fran Lock, Yomi Sode and many more.
Ahead of Refugee Week, internationally acclaimed musician Michael Cretu presents an evening of Balkan Roma Contemporary Jazz (16th June). Contemporary dance performances: harmony. 天人合一 by Ellandar Productions (2nd-3rd June) and TRY|TRYING|TRIED by Owen & Slater (22nd July) sit alongside improv show MATES: The Improvised ’90s Sitcom (8th July) and thought-provoking theatre I Love You, Mum – I Promise I Won’t Die by Octopus Dream Theatre (7th-9th July).
Theatre Deli’s free artist support initiatives: Producers Meet Up, Open Stage Night and Deli DropIns will continue on a regular basis throughout the year. Artists should also keep an eye on TheatreDeli’s social media channels, where space in the venue is given away for free each week through Free Space Fridays.
Based on Arley Street close to London Road, Theatre Deli’s new venue features three rehearsal rooms including a dance studio with a custom-built dance floor and mirrors; a performance space with a capacity of 120, an open area for hot desking, and a bar and cafe. The building is open from 10am-6pm, Monday-Friday and is available for hires, with current upcoming events including acting workshops, conferences, music nights and film screenings.
A national meanwhile-space charity, Theatre Deli’s model involves transforming unused spaces to support artists and offer communities access to the arts.
This season of work is a great expression of everything Deli stands for – accessible, diverse and exciting performances from both local and national talent. It’s been a joy to talk with the artists and companies represented in this season, and to bring their work to a wider audience here in Sheffield.” – Miranda Debenham, Producer for Theatre Deli.
Daljinder Singh, Executive Producer, adds: “We are delighted to open our new venue to audiences. Throughout its existence Deli has been an important partner for artists looking for support, space and the room to innovate and create. Our journey of discovering and repurposing disused spaces now takes us to Arley Street. In the coming months we look forward to welcoming artists, companies, and community change-makers through our doors and into our spaces. Theatre Deli Sheffield is an integral part of our region’s cultural landscape and we are excited to converse and collaborate with our brilliant creative community. We look forward to seeing you soon.”
