Discussions for the redevelopment of the beloved theatre and arts facility, The Montgomery, have commenced.
The Montgomery, located on Surrey Street, has been utilised by the Sheffield arts community for decades, and now plans have been put in place to improve the venue so that it is more accessible for future generations.
The proposal would see the entire front of house, main auditorium and backstage facilities redeveloped in order to modernise the venue. In particular, the alteration of the main frontage would give the building a much greater presence. Along with this, an installation of a lift would be included to make the building more user friendly and an addition of such would allow The Montgomery to offer a wider variety of performances.
Suggestions for a new affordable recording studio, bar area, improved toilet facilities and public have also been included in the proposal.
The Montgomery’s Managing Director, Dawn Reynolds, has said “We want The Monty to be loved by all the communities of Sheffield which means it has to be accessible, bright and ready for 21st century usage while at the same time retaining that important feeling for its remarkable heritage – a heritage that goes back well over a hundred years.”
Plans would see the construction of the building commence in 2022, with a completion date somewhere in 2023.
