This month, Broomhall book club The Lit Collective Sheffield are hosting an online literary festival celebrating womxn writers of colour.

Taking place 23rd-25th July and in partnership with Arts & Humanities Knowledge Exchange at The University of Sheffield, the event will include discussion groups, creative writing workshops and performances.

Alex Mason, Knowledge Exchange Project Manager, told Exposed: “We thought it’d be great to expand the opportunity from the book club to the rest of the city. This festival is fairly grassroots, all the book club members have been instrumental in organising it, and we just want to use this opportunity to engage people with literature by womxn writers of colour.”

“Most of the events will be accessible via a YouTube link available online, and there are a few ticketed events exclusively for womxn of colour on Eventbrite. The themes focused on in this festival are ones of hope, joy, family and imagination – themes that, sadly, aren’t often given much of a platform when womxn of colour are asked to speak.”

Many of the writers and speakers participating are centred around the north and Sheffield including Warda Yassin, Danaë Wellington, Desiree Reynolds, Maryam Jameela, Suhaiymah Manzoor-Khan, Yvonne Battle-Felton and more.
