Heard of Joseph Rodgers? He’s Sheffield’s most famous knife maker, and it’s rumoured that he operated out of a building in Hawley Croft close to Sheffield Cathedral in the late 17th Century. The shop sells Rodgers’ pocket knives with the Maltese Cross and Star trademark, as well as the George Wostenholm pocket and Bowie knife designs with his I*XL, 1787 trademark. After the battle of the Alamo in 1863, a Wolstenholm knife was reportedly found on Colonel James Bowie, and that design continues to be hand-made in Sheffield and is very popular with American customers as well as locals.
