A spectacular new show from Olivier award-winning performance maker Marisa Carnesky heads to Sheffield on 3 Feb.
SHOWWOMEN is not your average stage show—it’s a feminist odyssey that unveils the hidden herstory of British working-class entertainment and performance. Collaborating with the extraordinary talents of hair hanger/comedienne Fancy Chance, sword and spoken word artist Livia Kojo Alour, and physical and fire performer Lucifire, Carnesky weaves a captivating tapestry of live action, in-depth interviews and archival footage. Prepare to be transported into a dreamlike landscape filled with death-defying stunts, emotive acts, political resistance, and clandestine backstage rituals.
“The idea for the Showwomen show was born at the National Circus and Fairground Archive at the University of Sheffield when I was an associate artist there,” Carnesky told Exposed. “In 2010. It took over ten years for it to evolve and become a live performance. We are so thrilled to bring it back to the place where it all started and have the pleasure to have Professor Vanessa Toulmin with us for a Q and A after the show. Along with my amazing skilled, diverse cast Fancy Chance, Livia Kojo Alour and Lucifire we come to dazzle and inform, connecting the showwomen of the past I discovered in the archive with us: showwomen of today through a new feminist lens.”
