Sheffield’s leading independent cinema, Showroom Cinema, is is collaborating with friends and partners to present a diverse season of films and events made by and about LGBTQ+ people for LGBTQ+ History Month this February.
As part of the Japan Foundation Touring Film Programme, Showroom welcomes director Tetsuya Chihara and actress Serena Motola to the UK, for a live Q&A after their film Ice Cream Fever (6 February). The stylish romance follows the intersecting stories of four young women in modern-day Tokyo.
Cybergrime (24 February) is a programme of short films oozing with “homo-depravity”, presented in partnership with Mars Nicolì, a Sheffield Hallam PhD researcher in trans horror. The evening features a virtual Q&A with filmmaker and curator Henry Hanson.
Sheffield DocFest DocNights returns with Transition (26 February), by documentarian Jordan Bryon. Embedded with the Taliban, while masking his identity as a trans man, Bryon navigates ethical dilemmas and fast-changing politics following the war in Afghanistan.
The LGBTQ+ History Month programme begins on 3-4 February with a weekend of films by director Andrew Haigh. To celebrate All of Us Strangers (screening now), the Yorkshire-born filmmaker’s latest release, Showroom Cinema will screen three more of his intimate and personal dramas. The critically acclaimed whirlwind romance, Weekend, alongside 45 Years and Lean on Pete.
The season travels back to the 90’s in two LGBTQ+ themed rom coms. Coming-of-age, indie comedy The Incredibly True Adventure of Two Girls in Love (9 – 14 February) returns to screens, in a celebration of queer joy. Polarising comic romance, Chasing Amy (16-18 February) is shown in a new light through an introduction exploring bisexuality in cinema. The latter film’s legacy is considered in Chasing Chasing Amy (17 February), a Sav Rodgers’ documentary receiving its Northern premiere at Showroom Cinema.
More LGBTQ+ film favourites are presented throughout the month, including brand new musical The Color Purple (screening now), as well as the Pet Shop Boys Dreamworld: The Hits Live (4 February).
