The Lescar have been nominated for Jazz Venue of the Year at the 2018 Parliamentary Jazz awards, and with a stellar lineup for the coming months there’s no need to question why. Their jazz night takes place every Wednesday from 8pm ’til late.
3 October: Samantha Wright Quintet / Bela Horvath Trio
A thrilling double act consisting of two incredible bands that are quickly rising to the top of the UK jazz scene. Originating from Birmingham, Sam leads a unique two clarinet front-line quintet that has a snappy swinging approach. Whilst Leed’s based Bela Horvath Trio has a more modern and experimental style of jazz that is largely influenced by Keith Jarrett. Both acts have displayed remarkable musical maturity that has largely attributed to their budding success.
10 October: Sam Rapley’s Fabled
Sam Rapley has united some of the most prosperous musicians on the UK music scene to create some powerfully poetic music. Inspired by the relationship between storytelling and music, their music has an emotional directness that is equally sentimental and hopeful.
Saturday 13 October: Lines and Spaces night at The Holt
A special quadruple bill that will showcase various styles of jazz with performances from Cesca Grace Quartet, Kate Griffin Trio, Foxhat and Life Aquatic Band.
17 October: Land of If
Largely centred around the lyrics, this band’s music combines intimate songs, compelling melodies and superb instrumentation to produce a mesmerising musical experience.
24 October: Josh Schofield Quartet / Morpher
Two thriving acts from Leeds and Birmingham. Josh Schofield Quartet is a lively group of talented musicians that play vibrant and striking contemporary jazz. Morpher’s music on the other hand, is a experimental blend of grooves, breakbeats, drum and bass, and jazz with some electronic elements.
31 October: Olie Brice Quintet
Consisting of five of the best improvising performers in the UK, their music manages to embody tradition whilst still being forceful and dynamic.
7 November: Treppenwitz
A captivating trio whose music has a potency that is charmingly bold. They fuse their own original music with influences and tunes from Ornette Coleman, Paul Bley, Paul Motian and Geri Allen to create something new and adventurous.
14 November: Lorraine Baker’s Eden
A group that is hotly tipped for immense success, their music is concentrated on the eminent drummer Ed Blackwell. They have a clever combination of afro, dance and rock grooves with driving swing and free improv that has compelling energy and an alluring sense of edginess.
21 November: Eirik Svela Group
Norwegian guitarist Eirik Svela has teamed up with UK artists to bring his thought provoking and modern music to Sheffield.
28 November: Bad Brew / Skeltr Double Bill
Another double bill with two very contrasting acts. Bad brew have been a prominent act in the Sheffield music scene for some time, they skillfully fuse contemporary jazz with progressive rock and classical influences to create a vibrant set. Skeltr was named as Jazzwise Magazine’s band to watch for 2018. With their fiery sax solos and buoyant sound that is layered with emotive depth, they are one of the UK’s most exhilarating new bands.
