With spring just around the corner, here are some of Sheffield’s upcoming exhibitions that you won’t want to miss.
‘False Note’ – Site Gallery, 7th March – 26th May
‘False Note’ is a solo exhibition by Freya Dooley held at Site Gallery, comprising a suite of interconnected works which explore themes of replacement, communication and connection.
Dooley’s multi-disciplinary practice encompasses sound, moving-image, writing and performance. Her work is inspired by literary, musical and cinematic references, and the soundtrack composition is informed by her research in Rome into post-synchronised sound and sonic artifice in Italian cinema.

‘Ways of Water’ – Millennium Gallery, 15th February – 12th May
‘Ways of Water’ at the Millennium Gallery explores local water infrastructures, from historic wells to expansive reservoirs across sites in Yorkshire and Derbyshire.
An exhibition by Matterlurgy (Helena Hunter and Mark Peter Wright), ‘Ways of Water’ follows the historic and contemporary implications of the Sheffield cholera epidemic of 1832, which emerged due to unsanitary water conditions.
Film, photography, sculptures and archives will explore the scales and effects of wells and reservoirs.
The exhibition is part of ‘The Mouth’ in collaboration with Arts Catalyst, alongside ‘Skylarking’. More information can be found here.
‘Skylarking’ – Soft Ground, 22nd February – 18th May
The second exhibition of ‘The Mouth’ in collaboration with Arts Catalyst, ‘Skylarking’ is an exhibition by Sheffield-based artist Ashley Holmes.
‘Skylarking’ explores the relationship between landscapes, music, and belonging, amplifying the sounds of the architecture of caves, hills and public spaces in the city.
The words, music and field recordings of other artists are layered and manipulated in response to the Peak District and its sonic textures, echoes and reverberations.
‘Skylarking’ is free to enter and is held at Soft Ground on the Moor – more details can be found here.

‘Phlegm: Pandemic Diary’ – Millennium Gallery, 13th January – 7th July
Artist Phlegm presents his documentation of his observation of daily life during the COVID-19 pandemic.
67 pen and ink drawings blur the reality of the pandemic with the imaginary world he has created throughout his career.

‘LAND’ – Graves Gallery, 2nd January – 15th June
This exhibition comprises of photographs by Sheffield-based artist Matthew Conduit, with his work being inspired by post-industrial landscapes.
‘LAND’ presents a selection of images made over the last ten years which have never been on public display before, with Conduit exploring sites along Britain’s east coast.

‘We Are The Monument’ – Graves Gallery, 27th January – 21st December
Curated by artist Yuen Fong Ling, this exhibition at Graves Gallery looks at the ways in which the plinth can be seen as a social, political and cultural symbol.
Works featured include ‘Monumentalise’, a series of short films made by Ling in response to artworks and objects from Sheffield’s collections.

The Charlesworth Transport Gallery – Kelham Island Museum, continuing display
The Charlesworth Transport Gallery looks at the story of transport in Sheffield and showcases some of the best Sheffield-made vehicles from the 1920s.
Transport has played a vital role in Sheffield, with a good transport system crucial to carrying raw materials and goods in and out of the city.
Objects such as Ner-a-Car motorcycles and a Rolls Royce Avon jet engine are on display – find out more here.
