Sheffield’s first e-sports bar has revealed its secret location – the lower floor of the famous Boardwalk venue on Snig Hill.

In a post on Facebook, Meltdown said: “We are really pleased to announce we are joining the Castlegate area of the city with perfect timing to coincide with the magnificent regeneration efforts of Sheffield Council.

“We will proudly share our neighbourhood with The National Videogame Museum which had a fantastic launch this weekend. We also have some other great neighbours nearby in Foundry Coffee ShopQuasar Sheffield and Bassbox Sheffield.”

The Boardwalk finally reopened as Bassbox last month, and with Meltdown set for a 2019 opening, the historic venue could well be fully up and running in a matter of months.

Meltdown added: “We hope that we can inject our own little bit of history into the building and perhaps one day others will boast of the Sheffield venue that played host to some of the next generation of e-sports stars! We can’t wait to invite you into our brand new venue in early 2019. See you all soon.”

The usual features of a Meltdown bar are community tournaments, live viewing parties and other social events aimed at getting gamers together over a drink. There are more than 20 Metldown bars, most of which are located in France.

The plan is to open branches in the UK and in the US, as CEO Sophia Metz told Esports News UK last year: “We are opening a bar in Sheffield and would love to open more, I think the UK has great potential. It all comes down to finding the right candidates now! The UK had a slow start, but now with companies like Gfinity and others it has caught up quickly and is offering great content for the fans.”
