This October will mark the 44th Steel City Beer and Cider Festival in Sheffield, organised by Sheffield and District CAMRA  (Campaign for Real Ale). Each year the festival partners with a local charity to support them, with proceeds from the quiz, collection buckets and donations from spare beer tokens going towards a worthy cause.

It has just been announced that this year the chosen charity will be Roundabout, Sheffield’s youth housing charity, which has its self just celebrated its 40th anniversary. The charity is undoubtedly a worthy choice, it provides shelter, support and life skills to young people aged 16-24 who are currently homeless or are at risk of homelessness. The charity is committed to preventing homelessness and supports up to 155 young people a day, by equipping them with skills to improve their independence and running drop in centres. Not only that, but the charity runs education programmes in schools to raise awareness of a growing issue in our society.

Roundabout’s Chief Executive Ben Keegan is thrilled that Roundabout has been selected saying that “we rely heavily on the generosity of local people and organisations to ensure that we can continue to be there for those who need us”.

The Steel City Beer and Cider festival is always a big hit, with last year’s 6,100 festival goers supping  a staggering 14,500 pints of cask ale and 2,300 pints of cider and perry. Alongside sampling the latest ales that Sheffield had to offer, the generous people of Sheffield also managed to raise a whopping £1,300 for last year’s chosen charity. This year looks to be no different with preparations already underway for the event hosted at Kelham Island Museum, which means hopefully Roundabout will be set for a large donation and even more exposure for their great cause.

Steel City Festival Organiser, Paul Crofts says CAMRA “are delighted to be working with Roundabout as this year’s festival charity, and helping to raise funds for the valuable help and support they give to the homeless young people of the city”.
